In letters to various correspondents, Gastaldi seeks confirmation of scientific accuracy for the details of his painting of Newton's experiment with light refraction, recommends a student from the Accademia Albertina, and poses inquiries to Jean Désiré Regnier, a restorer in Paris, on technical information on Old Master and contemporary painting and other techniques of the profession. Letters received include detailed responses from Regnier furnishing the information requested, and letters from history painters throughout Italy, among them Achille Farina, Amédée Vignola, Alessandro Castellani, and Emilio Michelotto.
